I have been reading John Lescroart's series for many years and wasn't sure this stand alone could be as satisfying. After all, the prosecutors, defense attorneys, P.I.'s and detectives that kept us enthralled in his Dismas Hardy series would be tough to match.
No need to worry, because as in all of his books, it was hard to put down. Lescroart does a wonderful job in fleshing out his characters, and all of their personalities come alive on the pages of Fatal. Detective Beth Tully is a strong, if flawed, protagonist, and I certainly hope that this is not the last that we see of her.
The plot is complicated, in a positive way, and kept me guessing for much of the book. It was certainly a cautionary tale that makes the readers think about the choices they make. As much as we like to think differently, our choices always affect others, and Lescroart shows us that domino effect quite clearly in this book.
Thanks to this talented author for showing us that writing "out of the box" can definitely be a good move.
