Dan and Lori Fulton are awakened one night by a group of men who take Lori and their son to a secluded cabin, and insist that bank manager, Dan, withdraw $250,000 from his bank. To add a bit of incentive, all three family members have bombs strapped to them. Each bomb can be set off with the ring of a cell phone. As with all of Mofina's books, the reader follows different groups of people throughout the story, and the excitement grows with the turn of each page.
As the story builds, it is obvious that the kidnappers want more than the money, but is it due to Dan's dealings at the bank or to Lori's troubled past? The FBI and the police are involved, and since we find out things before they do, I found myself screaming at them when they passed by clues that were obvious to me. Although we don't get too involved in the background of the secondary characters, I found myself liking most of the "good guys" as the book progressed. One thing that I love about Rick Mofina's books, is his treatment of the "bad guys." While we truly dislike them and want them gone, he manages to take the reader into their heads enough to make their crimes believable.
Every Second is timely, dealing with terrorism and fanaticism, and it left me wondering how many plots are foiled by professionals as we go on with our day to day lives. Whether you are already a fan of this author or are about to be introduced to a new favorite, I highly recommend putting this book on your "next to read" list.
