In this latest book, although it is touted as a Dismis Hardy book, I think recently retired Abe Glitsky has the top role. Hal Chase, a guard in the San Francisco County Jail is arrested for the murder of his wife. He hires Hardy as his attorney, and Dismas asks his best friend Abe to come out of retirement and investigate and come up with other possible suspects. Hal, who is now being kept in the same jail he works in, is looking more and more guilty, until Abe stumbles upon questionable inmate deaths and corruption around every corner. The closer he gets to the truth, the more deaths occur.
Lescroart does an excellent job building strong women in his books. Hardy's wife, a social worker, and Glitsky's wife, working for the prosecutor's office, are both as strong and as important a part of these books as any of the men. I highly recommend The Keeper, and all of Lescroart's books to those who enjoy seeing all sides of a legal case.
