Genre: Historical Fiction Click book cover for Amazon.com I love reading books where historical figures are used in a fictional way. Author Raffel did this so well in his novel featuring JFK. Nate, his main character, is so engaging, and Nate's relationship with Kennedy is fun to read. The book is exciting from beginning to end.

Publisher - Thomas & Mercer Date of Publication - November 5, 2013 Genre: Fiction Click book cover for Amazon.com The Husband's Secret was a thought provoking novel about the power of secrets and betrayal in a marriage. It raises some interesting questions. Do we ever really know anyone as well as we think we do? Can you live with and love someone for years and not really know or understand the things that shape them? Once the trust is fractured in a marriage can the pieces be put back together? Will we ever truly understand the consequences of our actions?
This novel held my interest from the first to the last page. I loved the way the author chose to end the novel. If one of the the tests of a novel is if you are still thinking of the ending days later, then The Husband's Secret passed the test with flying colors! - Judith Zerulik Publisher - Putnam Adult Date of Publication - July 20, 2013 Genre: Non-Fiction/Historical Click book cover for Amazon.com Dear Abigail brings to life one of the most remarkable first ladies in American history. It focuses on her relationship with her two sisters in a way that the makes the reader feel the joy and angst that these three sisters experienced during their lifetime.
As a fan of of biographies of first ladies, it was a pleasant surprise to find that her relationship with her famous husband was not the focus of this novel. The sisters were all prolific letter writers, and through these letters the author was able to show the both the rivalries and closeness these ladies had with each other. We get a feel for what life was like during these turbulant times and how the first lady influenced her husband just as her sisters influenced her. Dear Abigail is a fun and informative read for American History buffs. - Judith Zerulik Publisher - Ballantine Books Publication Date - February 25, 2014 Genre: YA/Fantasy/Romance Click book cover for Amazon.com As one who loves twisted versions of beloved tales, I was over the moon when my local YA Librarian brought A.G. Howard's Splintered to my attention (by asking if I'd pre-ordered the sequel. Which is currently sitting by my bed and will have its spine cracked about 5 minutes after I finish this review). How this dark play on Alice in Wonderland managed to escape my notice for so many months is beyond me, but I am so very glad for that librarian.
Alyssa Gardner is a descendent of Alice Liddell, inspiration for Lewis Carol's classic tale. Alas, along with their dubious claim to fame, the women of the family also have an unfortunate tendency to, upon reaching puberty, hear the bugs and flowers talking to them. Thanks to this curse and an incident from Alyssa's childhood, her mother has been institutionalized for a decade; now that nature's creatures have decided to grace her with their communication as well, Alyssa fears she will be the next one locked away. When her mother is signed up for a treatment plan that the girl finds abhorrent, the only hope to save the family is a trip to Wonderland itself so she can set things right. She unwittingly brings along her long-time crush - the literal boy-next-door - and together they help us to explore a re-imagined version of the land we all think we know so well. I so wanted to love this book, and it didn't disappoint. With its dark fantasy, budding romance, and bizarre ideas that will make you question what you think about Carroll's old tale, Howard has created a world that I want to visit again and again. - Beth Ho Publisher - Amulet Books Date of Publication - January 16, 2013 |
