The legal thriller has long been a popular genre, and the life of a lawyer has often been glamorized.  Harper Lee gave us Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, and we saw the lawyer as a hero.  John Grisham's heroes can often "leap tall buildings in a single bound," while some authors portray lawyers as the scum of the earth. In his book Pardon Me For Protruding and Other True Tales, Jackson portrays neither hero nor villain. Instead he gives us a humorous glimpse of a southern lawyer doing his job.  His stories are fun and seem to be based on fact, if not 100% accurate by his own admission.  He explains the need to keep confidentiality while still telling his stories.

I enjoyed this book.  I felt like I was experiencing the south, and for a Philly girl who has lived her entire adult life in South Florida (more "northern" than Philadelphia albeit it's location) it was a welcome change.  It takes place in what we refer to as a simpler time and makes us see that simpler doesn't always mean simple.  There was still politics to maneuver and pressures to get around...all while stepping around chickens and rabbits.
 
We are introduced to nasty judges and sexy secretaries and shotguns while serving papers.  We laugh through his work tales and enjoy his personal life stories as well.
 
Definitely good for a light summer read whether you are from the north, south, east or west.
