Years ago I anxiously awaited James Patterson's yearly contribution to my fiction collection.  His protagonist, Alex Cross, was a hard-working detective surrounded by interesting family, friends and co-workers.  Each book was edge of the seat type of reading, and I never felt the need to skim past certain parts.

Through the years Patterson began writing more books per year, and I felt it hurt the quality of all that he produced.  Between his books written for young people, books he writes with others, and the few he writes himself, he probably produces eight to ten books a year.  I decided to stop reading his books several years ago.

Since he still seems to write his Alex Cross books by himself, I decided to take a recommendation and read Kill Alex Cross.  It begins with the kidnapping of the President's children and Alex soon enters the crime scene.  Of course there are complications and other agencies who don't want him around.  If I recall, that usually happens in a Cross novel.

Of course there is never just one plot in  the books in this series, and I always loved that aspect of his writing.   The terrorist plot in this book, is one that affects much of the capital  when a deadly contagion is found in the water supply. The problem now is that he doesn't seem to give closure on all of the subplots, and we are left waiting for another book to wrap everything up.

Patterson knows how to keep the reader turning pages, and that is a good thing.  His short chapters and strong characters make the readers feel that they must read "just one more chapter" before turning out the lights. The end disappointed me though, and I don't believe that I will be in a hurry to read the next in this series.  If you are a fan though, this did have some high points, and if you have never read an Alex Cross book, please start with the first in this series.  I promise you will speed through the first dozen in his series of twenty-five.
