At first he thinks his wife has just gotten distracted by shopping, but as minutes turned to hours he knows they are gone. He goes to mall security for help, but in his frustration becomes abusive and loses credibility. When the police get involved, and they check security cameras, it looks like Carver crossed the border alone. He knows his family was with him, but things get even worse when the Canadian police find his house covered in blood and all signs of his wife and children ever being there wiped away.
Carver finds himself sneaking back over the border, and with the help of his best friend, Crow, seeking clues to his families whereabouts. It is difficult to imagine that this quiet and handicapped bus driver becomes a super detective, but I bought into his desperate hunt for the family he loves. Much of this book doesn't make sense, but suspending reality is part of the fun. The excitement and mystery keeps the reader turning pages, and if you are a fan of Finder, Coben and Mofina, then McKenzie might just be another author to add to your wish list.
