The Amber room, originally created in 18th century Prussia, has also interested authors through the years. This room, built of amber and gold leaf, was pillaged by the Nazis, panel by panel, and never recovered. A replica was built near St. Petersburg, Russia and completed in 2003. The romance of this room and its value has been the theme of quite a few books, and Leverone does a good job bringing history to life in his novel.
When Newmann, who the CIA had been watching, suddenly disappears, Tracie, a CIA operative, is sent to replace the agent originally assigned to watch him. At the same time, the reader is introduced to the idea that Hitler is alive and the Reich is ready to take over with him as a figurehead. Although there are no new theories postulated in this book, it is a well written thriller filled with interesting characters. It caused me to check the Internet for some historical facts a few times, and that is always a sign of a good book for me.
Leverone does a good job of mixing facts with fiction, and brings back Tracie Tanner in a big way. Although this is my first Tanner thriller, it definitely won't be my last.
