Perhaps hope can be restored after all. First, they'll have to decipher how those from Heaven and Hell can coexist with those Between. The whole premise of Between was unique and fascinating. When I started the book and we were given the scientific reason for the angels falling, it immediately had me thinking. All sorts of things were rolling around in my head. What would this mean for Earth? How would it affect humans and life as we know it? The story line even sparked a conversation with my family. That's when I know I've been hooked into a story, when my mind wanders about the plot and I just have to talk about it and explore it.
There was quite a bit of mystery involved with the story. It was great to be discovering clues right along with Cassie and the group. Not only were we learning about Heaven and Hell, but also about the beings, and the origination of the world. Things weren't always black and white. Sometimes those who were supposed to be good were not. Likewise, those you thought were bad were actually good. There were also some unlikely love interests. The author deftly managed to relay quite a bit of information about this paranormal universe, intriguing the reader without being overwhelming. Although the novel is paranormal in nature, it is also character driven at heart.
Cassie is a college student who is essentially without family after loosing both of her parents since the angels fell. She seems to be going through the motions of life without really living, much like many people on Earth since the fall. I really felt for Cassie and her lonely existence. Finding Noah renews her faith and gives her a sense of purpose. Although a lot of the developments are scary and overwhelming, she really blossoms into a brave and courageous young woman who wants to help the greater good. As clues are deciphered and pieces come together, we are introduced to a whole new cast of characters. I loved how together they form a family-like unit, supporting each other and working together. Although, this book does focus on Heaven, Hell and Between—hence the title—it doesn't get overly religious or preachy. Readers of all religious backgrounds will be comfortable with the story as long as they have a general belief in the existence of God. The one area of complaint I had is that it was often confusing as to whose point of view I was reading. I enjoyed getting a chance to get into each of the characters’ minds, but had to reread certain areas to determine the character that was speaking at the moment. Between has it all: an interesting premise, lots of mystery, action, and a touch of romance. While Cassie and Noah's story does come to an end, you will find yourself wanting more from this cast of characters. It appears that wish will be granted, as sequels are expected based on the open ending.
