The Promise tells the story of Frankie and Benny, who we met in the novel, At Peace.
While I enjoyed the story, I found myself reading it over several days. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the book; it was just that when I put it down, it didn’t call me back as Ashley’s novels usually do.
The about-face that Benny’s family did with going from hating Frankie to embracing her, did not ring true to me. Yes, I know that she saved another family member, but how did that change their beliefs about her behavior with Benny’s brother.
Benny was a little too perfect and I usually love the author’s female protagonists, but for some reason, I couldn’t warm up to Frankie. I did enjoy visiting with some other characters from previous books in the series and loved seeing them settled and happy in their life.
The Promise was a pleasant read. There was a bit of suspense and lots of romance. I don’t think it was one of her better books, but I did enjoy it. I did love the ending of the book, but I always do. Ashley is a good writer, even when she is not at her best!
